Background
Following recent changes to fire safety regulations for energy plants across the UK, Stancold was appointed by DNO Consulting Ltd to design and install an external firewall at an energy plant in Barry.
Process
The project required a highly specialist solution, sitting at the intersection of fire-rated partitioning expertise and the technical demands of high voltage energy infrastructure.
Stancold adopted a collaborative approach to this project. Our wealth of knowledge with internal fire-rated partitioning paired with DNO Consulting Ltd’s experience in the high voltage industry played a key part in developing a bespoke concept and design for the external firewall structure.
The structure was to sit between a generator and reactor, so in the unlikely event of a fire, it will act as a core barrier against the spread of flame.
The main project challenges included:
- Designing and installing an external firewall capable of withstanding outdoor elements while achieving the required fire rating
- Working safely around live, operational high voltage machinery throughout the installation
- Translating internal fire-rated partitioning expertise into a bespoke external application
Project Delivery
Stancold installed Euroclad Mineral Fibre 125mm panels with an externally treated finish to withstand the outdoor environment, completed with fireboarding to the steelwork and overcladding in steel for maximum structural durability.
Health and safety was paramount throughout this project. With the client’s high voltage machinery remaining operational during installation, our project management and installation team carefully planned and executed every stage of the works to maintain a safe working environment at all times.
Our collaborative approach ensured all contractors on site were fully informed throughout the installation leading to a successful project completion that was handed over to a satisfied end user.
