COVID-Secure Welfare Facilities for Cardiff Construction Site

Like in many industries, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption within construction. Where sites were forced to close and activity halted throughout the first lockdown in 2020, getting back to work safely and in line with Government guidelines was, and continues to be, important to ensure projects continue to make significant progress.

Stancold have been involved in a number of COVID projects, including testing centres, Nightingale hospitals and vaccine production facilities, but were delighted to undertake a different requirement for a construction project in Cardiff recently.

Where the number of people allowed to work on this construction site was dependent on the compliance of the welfare facilities, our client, a global contractor, had existing provisions that were just too small for adequate social distancing in correlation to the number of workers on site.

Our team were responsible for creating a temporary enclosure on the ground floor of this multi-storey development, to facilitate a canteen with individual social distancing booths, as well as a changing and locker area that could remain COVID secure.

As the structure was to be located under cover, but not as an entirely internal facility, wind loadings had to be considered when selecting an appropriate panel system for the works. Due to its ability to meet the wind-load specification for the panel span, Kingspan’s QuadCore system was the most viable option.

This structure is due to be in place for around a year until this area is required as part of the ongoing build.

Stancold’s outstanding technical knowledge of a range of insulated panel systems enabled the team to deliver a quick and simple solution to maintain COVID safety on site.
