1. What is passive fire protection?

As opposed to active fire protection such as fire alarms and fire suppressants, passive fire protection is built into the property in form of a fire rated wall or door for instance, and does not require activating in order to fulfil its role.

Passive fire protection is fundamental to the construction of industrial and commercial buildings.
The scope of passive fire protection is to maintain the fire to its point of origin and prevent the flames and smoke from spreading through the building. Passive fire protection has the ability to protect the structural integrity of the property reducing its likelihood to collapse thus maintaining vital escape routes, limiting the damage to the property and reducing repair costs.

2. Why are Mineral Fibre cored composite panels suitable for passive fire protection?

Passive fire protection systems based on composite panels are more flexible, cheaper and quicker to install than traditional masonry or jumbo stud partitions.
Mineral Fibre panels have the ability to prevent the penetration of hot gases and flames and can reduce the temperature rise on the unexposed side of a fire, thus preventing fire spread through radiated heat.

The advanced sandwich structure provides panel strengths in excess of 50 kN/m². Combined with a weight of just 15–38 kg/m², depending on panel thickness, installation becomes far quicker and easier. The weight includes insulation, vapour barrier and finished surfaces.
