Installing Key Fire Protection for London Data Centre

Fire protection within the construction of data centres simply cannot be understated, especially as part of our data-driven society. It’s an area that Stancold hold a lot of experience, where our blog post explores this further.

Stancold are pleased to have won another project within the sector this Spring and will be working with a specialist interior fit-out contractor with plenty of expertise in the field. Based near London, the centre itself was only built around a year ago and now requires fire-rated sub-divisions within the main hall to create approximately 350m² of dedicated data rooms, a responsibility to be undertaken by the Stancold team.

As part of any construction works within data centre environments, planning all aspects of this project’s on-site activity is crucial, where working restrictions on the live site involve security, logistics and access. Stancold’s Contracts Manager, James Hoy, has completed a thorough site survey to assess methods for installation and put together a comprehensive build strategy to take into account the labour-intensive approach to the build.

Where the raised floor (the void where crucial electrical services are routed) has already been installed, forklift trucks and other mechanical equipment cannot be used to transport materials, so trolleys and handballing are the options available. Access into the building via existing steel ramps is also unsuitable for such vehicles, so this has been a huge planning consideration for Stancold’s projects team.

The build itself will utilise Eurobond’s Firemaster composite system of 150mm panel thickness, to achieve a one-hour fire-rating. Several door openings will be formed, with firestopping installed to maintain fire integrity.

With a quick build-time once on site, Stancold have worked collaboratively with the contractor and end-user throughout this process to ensure disruption is minimised to the day-to-day operations in the date centre.
