Freezer Storage for Carbon Fibre

Background: 

Tygavac, part of the Airtech Advanced Materials Group, partnered with CREST to deliver a high-performance temperature-controlled build solution for carbon fibre prepreg, a woven composite used in the medical, automotive and motorsport industries.

To maintain product integrity and extend shelf life, carbon fibre materials must be stored consistently below -20°C.

Process:

After a comprehensive site survey, CREST proposed the design and build of a turnkey freezer store that measured at 470m³.

The solution included high-density pallet racking for efficient handling of carbon fibre rolls, a reinforced and insulated concrete floor with an underfloor heating system to prevent frost damage and a full protective infrastructure to support operational safety and long-term performance.

Project Delivery:

CREST’s expert team installed a custom-integrated door to allow for the facility’s forklift to have easy access.

For the refrigeration system, evaporators and two condensing units were integrated to ensure even air distribution and stable sub-zero conditions to adhere to the composite material storage requirements.

As part of the turnkey package, all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems were installed by CREST.

To ensure precise performance monitoring, an RDM Data Manager was installed, enabling local and remote control of storage conditions via desktop or mobile app.

This allows for consistent temperature management and full traceability of the carbon fibre materials.
