Biopharmaceutical Cleanroom Suite Fit-Out

The Brief

A principal contractor delivering the fit-out of a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Portsmouth appointed Stancold to the architectural cleanroom envelope package. The scope combined an ISO 7 specification across four mould shop cleanrooms and a mould tool store with a 60-minute fire rating to a 13m-high compartment wall – two disciplines that would ordinarily sit with separate specialist subcontractors. Taking both within one package gave the contractor a single point of responsibility for the complete envelope, and one coordinated programme to plan the wider fit-out around.

Our Approach

Involved with the customer’s design and project team from the early stages, our team worked through a specification that continued to develop as the end user’s requirements changed. Several factors shaped the solution:

• ISO 7 classification across all controlled areas
• 60-minute fire rating to a 13m-high compartment wall
• Nearly 10,000m² of composite panelling across the facility
• A changing end user specification during design
• Supporting airlocks, changing areas and clean-not-classified corridors

Stancold recommended the Kingspan Versatile cleanroom system for the controlled areas, with Euroclad Firemaster integrated for the fire-rated elements, combining both systems within a single build to meet the full specification without compromising programme or budget.

Delivery in Action

Installation demanded tight sequencing alongside multiple trades, with steel frames and HVAC confirmed in place ahead of wall and ceiling installation. Our team worked in close collaboration with the contractor to synchronise works around a gantry crane system running the length of the cleanrooms, running multiple installation teams concurrently across different areas of the facility to hold the programme.

Technically demanding from both a specification and a programme standpoint, the project was delivered through early engagement and disciplined coordination on site – resolving the junctions between cleanroom and fire-rated elements before they became site issues for the wider team.
