ISO 7 cleanrooms are used in a variety of industries, from pharmaceutical contract packaging to automotive manufacturing and medical device production.
An ISO 7 cleanroom is designed to prevent the internal process from being contaminated, whether that’s production or handling of products.
How Do ISO 7 Cleanrooms Work?
Defined by the ISO 14644 standards, an ISO 7 cleanroom is a controlled environment that limits airborne particles to no more than 352,000 particles per cubic meter at a designated particle size of 0.5µm or larger, see chart below.

Along with limiting the airborne particles, an ISO 7 cleanroom will see 60 to 90 air changes per hour. This will be done through the HVAC system’s HEPA filter, which traps 99.9997% of 0.3 microns and replaces them with fresh, filtered air.
Gowning Rooms & Pass-Throughs
In order to maintain the strict conditions of the cleanroom, ISO 7 cleanrooms will often have separate gowning rooms for personnel donning and doffing cleanroom garments. ISO class 7 cleanrooms will request a gowning room with ISO class 8 air quality; however this can vary on a case-by-case basis.
Additionally, cleanroom pass-through systems will be in place to allow for equipment and supplies to go in and out of the cleanroom whilst maintaining high sterile standards. These will have interlocking doors and can only be accessed by one person at a time, which helps prevent uncontrolled airflow between each room.
