As part of their continued expansion, Proper Cornish, winners of multiple Taste of the West Awards, needed to convert an engineering workshop space into a production area for a new product offering.

Stancold Food Projects had previously completed a freezer fit-out for Proper Cornish, and were thrilled to be invited back for the new project!

Process

Our Project Specialists worked with Proper Cornish to finalise the layout and materials for a production space that would support every step of the manufacturing process, from raw goods to finished product.

The team worked diligently to complete the installation before Proper Cornish’s scheduled production kick-off.

Project Delivery

The space was transformed by Stancold into a series of interconnected rooms, delivering a full-scope production facility tailored to Proper Cornish’s specific requirements and timeline.

The fit-out area was equipped to accommodate every stage of production, including a changing room for employees and a shared access space for both receiving raw materials and dispatching finished products.

The installation featured high-performance Kingspan Quadcore panels, fire-rated Mineral Fibre where needed, and a temperature controlled-space for product storage.

Food Production Facility – Internal Fit-Out & Purpose-Built Extension, Birmingham

Speciality Food Manufacturer

The Brief

Stancold were involved in early-stage negotiations with a growing speciality food wholesaler, who were looking to expand and relocate their manufacturing facility within Birmingham.

Experienced project management contractor, Pentadel, took on the full turnkey package to transform and extend an existing building into a fit-for-purpose food manufacturing facility.

Our Approach

Stancold were appointed to undertake the food facility’s internal fit-out, alongside the internal and external cladding of a purpose-built extension, suited to product packaging and dispatch.

Our team worked collaboratively on the design and specification of this project to ensure that the end user’s requirements were met. Transferring specialist panel-build knowledge and skills into the external extension works allowed us to confidently add this element to our responsibilities.

The full specification included over 10 different areas, such as main production, a blast chiller, a dry store and a soy room.

Delivery in Action

As part of a 9-month phased construction, which included coordinating with other contractors on the busy site, Stancold successfully completed the hygienic panel installation to form areas as per the end user’s specification, alongside a 60-minute sub-dividing firewall between the building and its new extension, another part of Stancold’s scope to meet fire safety building regulations.

The internal fit-out extension construction included all cladding, using goosewing grey trapezoidal panels from Kingspan’s roof system, and door canopy. These works also encompassed a one-hour fire-rated boundary wall, utilising a RockSpan composite core. With tight access to consider, panels were craned from a bank to the rear of the building, alongside narrow plant used throughout.

Internally, the fit-out incorporated bespoke window details to accommodate the building’s existing roof lights, as well as specialist flush windows, allowing free viewing into the main production area. The team constructed a bulkhead to neatly conceal air handling equipment and all existing steelwork was encased to maintain food safety excellence.

This was a large project that required timely planning and coordination at every stage, where our team thrived in demonstrating such qualities.

Dual-Compartment Freezer Build for Facility Extension

Dairy Producer

Background

Stancold was commissioned by a returning client, a Somerset dairy producer, to outfit a new facility extension with a dual compartment freezer to support growing production.

Although we complete projects nationwide, projects for food and beverage producers in our region carry extra meaning!

With the producer’s Managing Director overseeing the freezer build, we had to integrate smoothly with the end user and their multiple contractors.

Process

Our team carried out a site visit to map the extension and how it would tie into the existing facility, then worked through several design revisions to align with the client’s budget and wider extension plans.

To align with the extension’s pitched roof, the producer requested a matching pitched ceiling for the freezer, meaning panels for three of the walls had to be cut to precise slopes. As Stancold’s insulated panel packages are made-to-order, this was no issue for our project delivery team.

Our client opted to build a two compartment frozen storage area so one side can be shut down during low demand periods, reducing energy use, operating costs and their overall carbon footprint.

Project Delivery

Stancold coordinated with the dairy producer’s other contractors to construct the dual-compartment freezer space within their newly built extension using a bespoke system of 150mm Kingspan Quadcore panels. The installation was complete with two sliding freezer doors for entry into both compartments and floor angle protection as forklift trucks will be used in the storage space.

Our project delivery team also managed the installation of a modular heating mat onto the extension’s concrete base and the concrete floor covering to accommodate forklift truck use. A galvanised steel top hat suspension system allowed the pitched ceiling to be supported.

We are always pleased to use our extensive expertise of insulated panel systems to help a UK food or beverage producer expand their operations.

The pitched roof meant that the panels would need to be cut to a specific slope, but that was no issue for our installation team.

Newberry International

The Brief

Newberry International Produce, a supplier and distributor, sought to build a factory in Gloucestershire, just up the road from us, to streamline their UK distribution operations.

Our Approach

The scope of this turnkey fit-out project included the installation of all the necessary whitewall panelling for the new facility.

The facility was designed to include a cold store and freezer with mobile racking for stock storage, three chiller rooms for produce preparation, a packing room, and a loading dock with direct access to distribution channels.

Delivery in Action

The Stancold team oversaw every aspect of the build, from groundworks and the construction of the freezer and chiller rooms to coordinating the installation of refrigeration, flooring, lighting, and floor slabs with appropriate ramps.

Our installers also engineered and built a bespoke solution to accommodate a loading bay that provides direct access from outside the building into the freezer, handling a temperature difference of up to 60°C.

Co-ordinating multiple trades and the design of the mobile racking were the biggest challenges on this project. Fortunately, the expertise of our contractors and flexibility of the client meant the project went seamlessly.

Drinks Producer

Background

Stancold’s long history of delivering successful projects at this bottled drinks producer’s Somerset site led to a recommendation to carry out further works at their Kegworth facility. As a producer with multiple sites nationwide, their trust in Stancold’s expertise demonstrates the strength of this ongoing partnership.

Process

As part of the upgrade works, the Stancold Food Projects team installed a system of hygienic partitions to create a process area, ingredients room, handwash station, and cold store. The project also required an airlock to connect the existing storage space with the new processing area.

Leveraging their expertise, Stancold’s specialists recommended materials and ancillaries that aligned with the evolving plans, while carefully scheduling the installation to coincide with the client’s dedicated shutdown period.

Project Delivery

Stancold’s installation team successfully installed a large-scale partitioning system using the Kingspan Quadcore panel system, designed with a durable food-safe laminate finish. The project included multiple rapid rise doors, personnel doors, and large vision panels to ensure clear visibility between areas.

To ensure a seamless and professional finish, all exposed original steelwork was encased with white hygienic cladding, complementing the surrounding fit-out. Our installers showcased reliability and provided expert guidance throughout, successfully meeting the project’s design and specification requirements.

Meat Producer

Background

Stancold’s Food Projects Team was approached by a construction company, working on behalf of a meat producer based in Sheffield, to fit out the producer’s abattoir facility.

Process

Multiple whitewall partitioned areas were required to suit the end user’s operations, alongside a visitor gallery complete with vision panels for PPE-free abattoir viewing.

Project Delivery

Stancold were able to install the requested whitewall partitions and the viewing room adherent to the design agreed upon by all parties. The construction schedule was altered by the end user due to unforeseen circumstances, but we stayed on hand and were able to finish the project efficiently and thoroughly once they were ready for the installation to continue.

The project ended up requiring a complex system of hygienic whitewall panelling and over twenty specific door fit-outs. Despite the schedule alterations by the end user, Stancold made sure to see this installation through to the end, working with the main contractor and end user’s timelines. We were pleased to do our part in getting the abattoir up and running for the facility’s end user.

As the plans for the proposed mezzanine floor evolved, Stancold’s team collaborated closely with Seafood & Eat It! to ensure the fit-out solution seamlessly aligned with the facility’s operational requirements.

The finalized layout featured a series of food-safe rooms tailored to their new crab meat processing facility. This included frozen and chilled storage areas, a blast chiller, and a dedicated office space to support their operations.

To safeguard the mezzanine floor, Stancold installed an independently suspended fire-rated ceiling, precisely fitted to the existing structure. Minshall Construction

Background

Stancold’s food projects team were appointed as the internal fit-out contractor by leading industrial construction company, Minshall Construction, as part of a food site redevelopment for an award-winning ingredients supplier in Wales.

Process

Over a construction programme of three phases, Stancold were required to undertake the food-safe fit-out of a new-build extension, the installation of a blast freezer and reconfiguration works to an existing production area.

The team were able to advise on appropriate design changes to suit the services already in place and navigate complexities around a large bulkhead section to the first floor.

Project Delivery

Over 18 months, Stancold collaborated closely with Minshall Construction to complete the works in line with the scheduled programme, taking an approach that allowed the client to start operating in finished areas while others were still in progress.

Our package included the installation of both insulated and fire-rated composite panel systems, vision panels and doors to form high-risk and low-risk areas, airlocks and offices, all complete with a food-safe finish to fulfil the required safety standards and an aesthetically ‘clean’ fit-out throughout.

As part of their exciting expansion plans, our client, Riverford Organic, called upon us again to assist in the construction of a cold storage area within their new distribution hub in central London.

Process

As Riverford’s trusted supplier for hygienic panelling across their sites, Stancold Food Projects collaborated closely with their Project Manager and the appointed refrigeration contractor to ensure the storage room met the required specifications for fresh produce while adhering to the agreed construction timeline.

Project Delivery

Our team successfully installed the 120-pallet cold storage facility alongside 3 doors – a hinged chiller door, fire exit door and an automatic sliding chiller door.

Thanks to its superior insulating properties and white food-safe laminate finish, Kingspan’s Quadcore panel system was the most suitable option for these works, while the automatic sliding chiller door was chosen for access efficiency and convenience.

Due to increased demand for their products, a foodservice provider serving the South East required additional cold storage areas as part of their first phase of expansion plans.

Process

Within the client’s newly acquired warehouse, Stancold were able to offer a full turnkey cold storage build solution to suit their needs. This included the coordination and installation of food-safe panelling, doors, refrigeration, racking, flooring and electrical connections.

We worked alongside our client’s nominated refrigeration contractor throughout the project, where pre-construction meetings between the three parties were essential to discuss design details and provide guidance on the finer elements of the build.

Stancold efficiently and professionally installed the Kingspan Quadcore panel system for this project.

With a food-safe finish, the large freezer was built using high-performance insulated panels, while the chiller featured slightly thinner panels. Both facilities were fitted with specialist Kingspan sliding doors.

The team coordinated the installation of the freezer’s concrete flooring, heavy-duty pallet racking for 280 pallets, and a refrigeration system capable of maintaining -18°C.

Completed in just six weeks, the project delivered fully operational facilities, ready for immediate use.

Background

Due to continued business growth, this food-to-go manufacturer needed to expand their food production and storage facility.

Process

For this complex scheme, we had to consider the different temperatures for chillers, freezers and packing facilities along with fire-rated areas within the production facility. The plan included a range of facilities; ingredient chillers, product preparation rooms, temperature-controlled packing areas, low-temperature storage and marshalling areas, alongside the installation of 58 various doors.

Project Delivery

To suit the requirements of each room, a range of different panel thicknesses were used across the project, including a 175mm firewall. Due to its large-scale nature, a project re-design was required during installation to include adaptations to work around steel walkways in the ceiling. The complexity of this project displayed the Stancold team’s technical capabilities and ability to meet our clients’ specific requirements.

Recently acquired by the Onore Group, the company is poised for even greater growth while staying true to its Cornwall roots. A new contract with a nationwide distributor marked an exciting milestone, necessitating an operational expansion. To support their growing production needs, Proper Cornish enlisted the expertise of the Stancold team to transform an unused space into a state-of-the-art freezer, specially designed to store bacon destined for their signature pastry goods.

Process

The initial plans involved fitting whitewall around the facility’s columns. However, the Stancold Food Projects team proposed an alternative solution: fitting the whitewall across the columns instead. This approach not only reduced the overall project cost but also made no impact on the freezer’s storage capacity due to the size and shape of the good stored there.

Background

Stancold has worked on multiple installation projects for our the team at Refresco at their various sites. Our Food Projects Specialists have developed a strong relationship with Refresco and they can always rely on Stancold to help their production facilities evolve and expand.

Process

While we were planning out the installation of a storage area for packaging materials at Refresco’s Derby site, they came to us with an additional project for a production briefing area. This would make production meetings more efficient for the Refresco team as getting to the existing offices required a long walk through the factory.

Due to the fast-paced nature of their production operations, it was in the best interest of the client for us to get both projects completed within the same week.

To finish both projects within the same week, not only did our projects team have to alter the production schedule for the on-site installers, but the delivery of the panels for the office fit-out needed to be moved forward.

Parkers Foodservice Ltd

Background

To be able to expand their service offering across pubs, schools and hotels, family-run wholesaler Parkers Foodservice entrusted Stancold to assist in their relocation to larger premises in Chichester.

Process

The new building required a hygienic production area fit-out, which included two freezers, three chillers and a preparation area. On the site survey, Stancold were able to offer advice on suitability for their needs and adapt the design accordingly.

Due to the existing structure of the premises and a mezzanine to work beneath, attention-to-detail was key throughout the design stages to accommodate expected intricacies during the install.

Project Delivery

Stancold utilised Kingspan’s Quadcore hygienic panelling system to construct five temperature-controlled areas, two freezers and three chillers, alongside a prep area within the vacant space. The was accompanied by a number of sliding freezer and chiller doors to complete the fit-out.

The team carefully cladded all existing steel columns, working efficiently and flexibly as several design changes were made over the course of the installation.

The hygienic production area fit-out project was successfully completed in under three weeks, to the client’s specification and level of satisfaction.

Background

Yeo Valley is a family-run business based in Somerset, producing organic dairy products since the 1960s. Our Food Projects team has worked with Yeo Valley on many occasions, establishing a great relationship between the two companies.

Process

Stancold was appointed to expand the existing dairy factory to the client’s specifications, with two large production areas, hygienic food-safe corridors and a blast chiller area, overlaid by a large self-supporting ceiling. The partition between the existing factory and around the perimeter needed to be a 2-hour fire-rated wall.

Solution

From the preliminary design and feasibility stages, Stancold worked closely with the client to ensure all elements of the projects were considered. The project had to be carefully managed as we ‘broke through’ the live factory at several points, all of which we managed with ease.

Stancold were able to deliver the dairy factory fit-out on schedule and to Yeo Valley’s specifications.

Bath Soft Cheese

Background

Stancold Food Projects was pleased to continue its partnership with Bath Soft Cheese, a respected producer right around the corner from us, as we were once again approached to assist with their latest site expansion.

Process

To expand its production capabilities, Bath Soft Cheese required a food-safe fit-out within its recently built extension, therefore creating new space for maturation and blue cheese production.

Project Delivery

The Stancold Food Projects team installed Kingspan Quadcore panelling to form six new areas within the production extension, integrating Mineral Fibre panels to comply with Building Control’s passive fire protection requirements.

The mezzanine floor was capped and clad to achieve a clean, visually appealing finish, while eight new doors were installed and two of the client’s existing doors were re-installed with care.

This project with Bath Soft Cheese was a great success. Even with COVID safety measures in place, our team ensured efficient delivery, value-engineered solutions, and a satisfied client.

National Food Manufacturer

Background

Following a competitive tender process, Stancold won the work to complete the entire internal food-safe fit-out for a new food production area extension spanning two floors, undertaken by national contractor, Walker Construction.

Process

The end user, a household name in food manufacturing, specified non-combustibility as a key factor within the construction. To meet their requirements, Stancold were able to offer white hygienic panelling with a Mineral Fibre core and worked with Walker Construction and the end user to accommodate changing design specifications before starting on-site.

Project Delivery

Stancold installed a comprehensive system of Mineral Fibre core panelling with a hygienic finish, to form a number of new areas within the vast production warehouse space. This included goods-in areas, pallet stores, stairwell enclosures between floors, hygienic corridors and plant rooms.

Stancold were also responsible for the installation of all single and double fire exit doors, as well as 60-minute fire-rated doors where required; approximately 40 doors in total.

The team took care of the intricate construction details around the existing steelwork, carefully matching up panel joints for an aesthetically pleasing finish throughout. Our attention to detail and flexibility on-site, working with and around other contractors, were key elements in ensuring that the build was a success.

Easton Chilli

Background

Easton Chilli was started by Rikki Tooley as a passion project and it quickly grew into a successful Bristol business. Initially operating out of rented and pub kitchens, Rikki soon outgrew those spaces. Discovering an available Easton unit, he needed a specialist contractor for a thorough, food-safe fit-out.

Process

Rikki found Stancold through his membership in Taste of the West. Keen to support members’ growth, Stancold promptly collaborated with him to develop a kitchen fit-out that met his exact needs. The project scope for the production space also included the installation of two food-safe hinged personnel doors.

Project Delivery

The Stancold installation team efficiently completed a system of Kingspan Quadcore food-safe paneling to form Easton Chilli’s production space within their new industrial unit.

One logistical consideration was navigating Easton’s compact roads, which meant Stancold had to arrange for the panels to be delivered on smaller vehicles. In 75+ years of delivering food-safe fit-outs, that was far from a challenge for our team.

Stancold delivered the commercial kitchen fit-out on time and to the exact specification of the client, so that Easton Chilli could commence producing their excellent chilli jams and sauces.

We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with a local food producer, especially one so passionate about their craft. Supporting the food and drink industry is something we take great pride in, and it’s always rewarding to play a part in helping businesses in our region grow and thrive.

Process

Our team worked closely with the bakery’s management to create a practical and efficient layout for their new facility. This included a walk-in freezer, chiller store, hygienic storage and production areas, as well as changing rooms and a stairwell spanning two levels.

Stancold’s experienced project managers collaborated with the client to ensure the site’s whitewall layout was tailored to support smooth and efficient day-to-day operations.

Kingsland Drinks is a premier independent supplier of wine and spirits based in Manchester. They have been based in the UK since their founding in 1895 and distribute to a wide range of customers including Nisa, Co-Op, and Tesco.

Process

Kingsland approached the Stancold team to install a triple-compartment office within their existing drinks production facility.

The Food Projects team presented Kingsland with multiple designs with different layouts and worked with their site managers to settle on a design that would suit their needs and efficiently use the existing space in the facility.

The Stancold team were able to work flexibly with the client’s changing timescales.

Project Delivery

Over the course of the project, Stancold installed the triple-compartment office to the agreed specifications centring around the Kingspan Quadcore system.

As part of the office build, we also supplied and installed two capped openings, three single-hinged doors, and two polycarbonate vision panels.

We were able to set up the office project to provide minimal disruptions to the client’s day-to-day drinks production operations.

Time Wholesale UK

Background

Our client, Time Wholesale UK, approached us to provide a temperature-controlled facility for the storage of ice products at their site.

Process

Stancold worked with the client and a trusted refrigeration partner to design a solution that would fit Time Wholesale UK’s temperature, food-safe and logistical needs.

The facility design needed to fit within the available space in the existing wholesale warehouse.

Project Delivery

The team constructed a facility to suit the client’s specification with Kingspan Quadcore food-safe panels.

Aluminium treadplate protection was added to all internal walls in order to prevent damage from forklifts and pallet trucks.

A sliding freezer door, strip curtains and insulated concrete flooring were also installed as part of the project specification, where the timing and coordination of each element was key to ensure a successful build and a satisfied client.

The installation also accommodated a condenser unit to the rear of the room so that the entire facility could remain self-contained.

Insulated Engineering Workshop for Dairy Producer, Wiltshire

Dairy Producer

Background

A building contractor Stancold regularly works with contacted the Food Projects team to assist with a project at a Wiltshire dairy facility.

The dairy producer wanted to line their engineering workshop with hygienic whitewall panelling to match the rest of the facility and to insulate it against external temperatures. They also required the installation of an office space in the workshop for their engineers.

Food production sites often have an engineering workshop separate from the production and product storage areas. In many cases this is for the maintenance of site machinery.

Process

The Stancold Food Projects team collaborated with the main contractor and the end user to develop an optimal design for the engineering space.

The design had to account for an existing roller door in the engineering space.

Project Delivery

Stancold efficiently installed the insulated engineering workshop and office space using Kingspan panelling, ensuring it not only matched the rest of the facility but also provided improved warmth for the engineers during the colder months.

The design and installation also incorporated an opening for the existing roller door and two hinged personnel doors for staff access.

The nature of the panels serves to not only provide consistency with the rest of the site, but also insulate the engineers from external temperatures.

Yeo Valley is one of the UK’s premier dairy producers, operating four sites throughout the Southwest. Process

The team at Yeo Valley approached us to design and build a new whitewalled processing area for their savoury fruit projects within an unused space at their Crewkerne facility, to be built on existing flooring.

Stancold’s team worked with the client to create a cost-efficient design for the processing facility over multiple revisions that met the client’s various requirements. Stancold’s installers would have to work around a drainage project in progress at the facility during the same timescale.

Project Delivery

Stancold successfully delivered the processing area to Yeo Valley’s exact specifications within the required timeframe. This included installing high-performance Kingspan paneling, capping openings for existing doors, fitting a new door, and suspending the ceiling from the existing structure.

Additionally, Stancold installed ceiling-mounted railings to ensure Yeo Valley’s team could safely carry out maintenance on the whitewalled roof.

Background

Stancold have been working with the end user, a successful meat producer, for 5 years, and have a strong relationship with the local engineering firm overseeing all works on site in Bristol.

Process

As part of the end user’s ongoing facility upgrade works, the end user required a new meat conveyor area within their existing production hall.

Stancold were entrusted with this project, undertaking the installation out-of-hours to minimise disruption to day-to-day operations.

Project Delivery

Our in-house installation team constructed two conveyor rooms using white food-safe full-height panels, installed to the existing ceiling. Sliding doors and vision panels were seamlessly integrated into the facility.

Stancold also created openings within the partitioning to allow for the client’s new conveyor equipment to pass through, neatly capping off where required so insulation is not exposed.

Process

This project required an increase in the capacity of Marshfield Bakery’s headquarters, by creating additional production and storage areas including an NPD room and a ‘drive-in’ chiller.

The Stancold Food Projects team collaborated closely with Marshfield to carefully schedule the installation, ensuring the extension was completed with minimal disruption to the bakery’s day-to-day operations.

Puffin Produce Ltd

Background

Following the continued growth of the business over recent years, Puffin Produce, a grower and supplier of fruit and vegetables, planned to introduce an automated sorting warehouse on their Haverfordwest site to improve efficiency.

Process

Stancold began discussions with Puffin Produce regarding the food-safe partitioning required to house the new automated sorting equipment on site.

We worked with the appointed architect during planning to design and then propose a detailed scheme of works, which consisted of allowances for intricate details within the project. This included a horizontal panel installation due to the 19m ceiling height and the creation of penetrations for the equipment’s cabling.

Project Delivery

Stancold installed four hygienic partitions in the warehouse, using Kingspan Quadcore panels to achieve a food-safe finish. Given the 19m ceiling height, the panels were installed horizontally between the existing framework, as a vertical build would not have been possible.

The team also created a series of penetrations within the partitions to allow for the cabling of the new equipment to run through, an element of the build that required planning and accuracy. The hygienic space was integrated with several personnel doors and a vision panel, expertly installed by the team to complete the works on site.

Our continued flexibility in adhering to both the site and customer requirements throughout this project was key in ensuring a successful completion of the sorting warehouse with a satisfied customer.

Stancold were approached by John Sheppard’s team to fit-out the extension with the three specified chilled storage units to support their growing business. As a thriving foodservice business and proud Taste of the West member, Hunts Food Group needed to expand their chilled capacity, loading areas, and marshalling space to meet peak demand.

Having previously collaborated with Hunts, Stancold’s Food Projects team was delighted to partner with them once again to deliver a tailored solution.

Process

Stancold conducted multiple site visits to assess restrictions and collaborated closely with Hunts Food Group’s on-site team to develop a comprehensive design and build programme. After several revisions and refinements, a final scheme was agreed upon.

Project Delivery

To enclose the existing exposed canopy, Kingspan Quadcore wall panels were installed, providing essential insulation and protection from the elements. These panels were cut to accommodate the varying floor levels.

During the summer, heat build-up under the canopy placed additional strain on the low-temperature cold store. By creating a chilled loading bay, we not only increased capacity but also improved the cold store’s overall efficiency.

With grant support from the Marine Management Organisation and European Fisheries Fund, they approached the Stancold Food Projects team to assist in bringing their vision of a purpose-built, high-capacity shellfish processing facility to life.

Process

Collaborating with the AM team, Stancold’s Food Projects Specialists meticulously helped plan a facility fit-out that delivered on both efficiency and functionality. Key features included a low-care raw goods reception chiller, a high-care cooking area complete with steam and ventilation systems, production and packing zones, blast and holding freezers, and well-equipped staff welfare areas.

From sourcing materials to refining plans and specifications, we managed the internal fit-out project end-to-end, ensuring every detail was aligned with AM Seafoods’ vision.

Our friends at Adcock Refrigeration & Air Conditioning approached us to provide a whitewall installation for a storage chiller on a site they were working on in Sittingbourne.

Stancold has worked with Adcock on multiple projects throughout the UK over the years, so we were glad to be involved with them on this chiller installation.

Process

The chiller installation was for an Adcock client who specialises in food and drink testing services. They test food and drink products for microbiological, nutritional, and allergen data among other things.

Our Food Projects team worked with Adcock and the end user to determine the best production schedule to suit all parties. We also assessed the end user’s specific needs to decide on the most appropriate whitewall solution to build the chiller.

Project Delivery

The Stancold Food Projects installation team were on site for three days to install the required system of Kingspan Quadcore panelling of 80mm thickness.

The installation also required a hinged chiller door, a PVC strip curtain, and a suspended ceiling that complies with BS6399 for walk-on maintenance. Stancold values opportunities to develop and maintain strong relationships with service partners like the team at

In order to produce a new product range for a national supermarket, the Pro Pak factory needed a full renovation involving internal hygienic partitioning. Stancold Food Projects had been recommended by one of their suppliers to carry out the food factory expansion project.

Process

Our Food Projects team carried out a full survey of the prospective area within their existing ready meal facility, offering budget pricing and feasibility assistance in the initial stages. As the scheme developed, we created a programme of works and carried out value engineering assistance to ensure the client received a fit-for-purpose food-safe partitioning scheme that met their budget.

Project Delivery

We created the high care rooms and lined walls in the existing building with Kingspan KS1100 Quadcore panels and removed the current kitchen and changing area walls as well as carrying out general modifications to ensure that site met the stringent hygiene requirements demanded by the client. The works were carried out on time and to budget to the complete satisfaction of our client.

The new client required our expertise to build frozen and chilled storage as well as a distribution warehouse for the end user, Europe’s biggest importer and developer of Japanese food.

The Stancold Food Projects team efficiently installed a series of rooms, including a large-scale freezer area. For ease of access, we also installed a rapid-rise door.

Due to the high value and storage requirements of sake, a separate chiller was created alongside the vegetable chiller for fresh produce. We also installed a dock chiller to keep the products at the correct temperature.

Having worked closely with the Engineering Manager at Twinings in his previous role, we were very pleased when he got in touch directly when they needed whitewall partitioning to separate their production facility and a new workshop.

Process

Twinings needed Stancold Food Projects to handle the installation of a new workshop area for maintenance and a series of five partition walls. The workshop area was to have two vision panels and five hinged personnel doors. A roller shutter door was installed in the partition wall leading through to the factory for ease of access.

Project Delivery

The challenge with the installation of the workshop and the partition walling was that the team had to work around the live factory as Twinings needed to continue production.

This was no problem thanks to our dedicated Food Projects management team and an experienced installer team who have no issue working in live food production environments and implementing phased construction schedules.

The project timeline was structured a bit differently than most of the food facility extension projects we work on, so we had to abide by a phased construction schedule with three separate parts of the project being separated by several weeks.

At Stancold, we pride ourselves on flexibility, and our experienced projects team easily adjusted to meet the demands of this particular schedule.

Dairy Producer

Background

As food safety requirements have been significantly overhauled and continue to change within the industry, insurers and trade bodies require further evidence on the products used within food manufacturing facilities.

On their insurer’s request, our client required Stancold to undertake an insulated panel inspection at their production facility, and produce a core sample box with a corresponding report identifying their make-up.

Process

Once the required inspection areas were highlighted, Stancold’s team arranged a time to visit the client’s site, armed with the correct tools to extract panel core samples and neatly fill and reseal.

Project Delivery

The experienced team took over ten samples across the facility, always surveying in inconspicuous areas within both walls and ceilings to maintain tidiness. This process showed that polystyrene-cored panel systems and PIR panels were present and that there were some areas of damage and delamination.

In areas where access wasn’t feasible on the day, the experienced team were able to make informed assumptions about the panel insulation material and clearly indicated this on the report submitted to our client.

Through utilising expertise and industry experience of over 75 years, Stancold were able to reliably offer an independent insulated panel inspection service to assist with this essential insurance validation process.

The facility, located in London, is their principal warehouse for the distribution of their food products.

The proposed whitewall layout optimised space for storing and preparing chilled and frozen food while accommodating the client’s specific racking needs.

Stancold installed a range of temperature-controlled areas, each equipped with the appropriate refrigeration to ensure optimal conditions throughout the warehouse. This included a large freezer, five chill rooms designed for various food products, a dedicated food preparation area, and multiple marshalling zones.

Stancold were appointed by Project Link, food industry construction experts, to assist with the extension and refurbishment of a large fish processing and preparation area for Flying Fish Seafoods in Cornwall. Flying Fish Seafoods are suppliers of high-quality fish to restaurants and hotels all over the South and West of England.

Process

The project was delivered in two main phases. Phase 1 created a chilled fish preparation area using hygienic insulated partitioning in the new extension. Phase 2 removed and replaced the existing chill store and processing area, linking it to the new preparation space. A lobster unit was added as a later phase.

Consistent chilling across every stage of production and storage preserves product quality and shelf life. Stancold worked with Project Link and the end user to design and plan the construction of the temperature‑controlled areas to Flying Fish’s specifications and product requirements.

Project Delivery

Stancold completed the works over three phases with no disruption to production and while meeting strict site requirements and tight deadlines. Working closely with Project Link, we delivered temperature‑controlled fish processing and preparation areas that enabled Flying Fish Seafoods to expand its product line to include lobster products.

Following a successful tender process Stancold were awarded the contract to deliver an 84-metre long, 120-minute fire-rated wall and the construction of a non-fire-rated enclosure for a processing room.

Process

Our sales and design teams consulted the client’s architects to propose a solution that accommodated the existing steelwork structure. Following a site visit to advise on possible up-rating of fire-rated elements already in place, Stancold specified a vertically oriented wall made of two stacked rows of Euroclad panels, optimising both the fire rating and integration with the building’s structural framework.

The main project challenges included:

Designing an 84-metre long, 120-minute fire-rated wall around existing steelwork
Coordinating phased site visits in line with other contractors’ programmes
Constructing a specialist enclosure for flammable starch-processing operations

Project Delivery

Our technical expertise and collaborative approach ensured the specification met both the fire safety requirements and the operational needs of a sensitive food manufacturing environment.

The Stancold team liaised closely with the client to coordinate our visits in line with other works on site, allowing for flexible delivery of the overall project. Using Euroclad panels, we successfully constructed the 84-metre long, 120-minute fire-rated wall, complete with up-rated fire protection on existing elements.

A month later, our team returned to site to construct a 150m² non-combustible enclosure to contain the starch-processing plant. Given the flammable nature of starch, keeping this area separate from the rest of the facility was essential, and our composite panel solution provided the containment and protection required while maintaining operational efficiency.

Thanks to our expertise in building various types of controlled environments, our team was able to propose a solution meeting requirements of laboratory sample storage above a typical food-safe cold room without overextending into strict, clean facility standards.

The joint effort between Stancold and Adcock resulted in a value & specification-optimised design, precisely fulfilling the end-user’s needs.

Having previously worked with Taste Tech Limited on a confectionery laboratory, we were delighted to be approached by them again to provide a fit-out solution for their new hygienic bakery.

Process

As a research and development company, Taste Tech needed a space in their facility in which to test a range of performance-enhancing solutions. The food-safe panel finish enables them to keep the environment hygienic.

Flour is highly flammable so Taste Tech also required a 1-hour fire rating for the panels and air ventilation systems.

Our team worked with Taste Tech to develop a layout to suit not only their hygienic but fire-rated requirements.

Project Delivery

Stancold installed a 1-hour fire-rated hygienic room using Eurobond mineral fibre-cored panels with a food-safe polyester finish. The build included two fire-rated hinged personnel doors, a vision panel, and two intumescent air transfer vents to ensure safety and functionality.

The project was completed on schedule, and we look forward to collaborating with Taste Tech on future projects.

4-Hour Fire-Rated Factory Partitions

Specialist Flour Producer

Background

Due to an unexpected extension for more specialist products, our client built an extension to their existing Berkshire-based facility.

Their extension required fire-rated partitioning demanding both high-level fire protection and compliance with stringent food industry hygiene standards.

Process

The project came with some unique challenges including the requirement for a combination of both 4-hour and 1-hour firewalls. 4-hour fire ratings represent one of the most demanding specifications in passive fire protection, requiring thicker composite panels, comprehensive steelwork protection, and extensive fire-stopping throughout to ensure the structure can withstand prolonged fire exposure. The project also needed a 1-hour fire-rated staircase enclosure with full fire-stopping, to create compliant separation within the new mill and production facility.

Main project challenges included:

Achieving 4-hour fire separation between new and existing buildings
Meeting food industry hygiene requirements alongside fire protection standards
Integrating fire-rated steelwork protection and comprehensive fire-stopping

Project Delivery

Stancold installed 4-hour fire walls constructed using 150mm thick ‘Firemaster Wall Ultima panels’ from Euroclad Laminates, with supporting steelwork encased in 50mm Vermiculux boards to achieve the required protection. Full fire-stopping at wall heads completed the 4-hour separation.

For 1-hour fire-rated areas, we installed 100mm Firemaster Wall Extra Panels with comprehensive head and end-of-wall fire-stopping details, successfully meeting all fire safety and hygiene compliance requirements on programme.

Cordial Production Area, Belvoir Fruit Farms

Belvoir Fruit Farms

Background

In 2014 due to increased demands for their products, award-winning cordial makers, Belvoir Fruit Farms invested in relocating their cordial production factory from Bentham to Bottesford, Leicestershire.

Process

Belvoir approached Stancold to supply and installation of approximately 5000m² insulated white food-safe wall and ceiling panels to form a new production area of around 2000m² including fire-rated partition walls, a chiller, hygienic and temperature-controlled cordial production and packing areas.

Project Delivery

The Stancold team have reconfigured several existing buildings to create the right conditions and enable Belvoir to increase the production capacity at the new facility and achieve a higher level of operational excellence.

Installation was completed on time and on budget.

Meat Production Factory, Telford

Faccenda

Background

Faccenda Group are one of the UK’s largest food businesses with over 50 years of experience in the retail and food service sectors.

Process

Stancold was appointed to build a new temperature-controlled meat production factory with multiple rooms, corridors, chillers and distribution warehousing an overall area of 10,500m². Over extensive on-site consultations and communication with the client, the Stancold Food Projects team were able to start production on a fit-out for the new facility.

Project Delivery

Stancold has adapted well to time constraints by extending working hours and increasing efficiency to complete the fit-out for the meat production factory. We’ve worked closely with the building contractors in the erection of a PIR firewall in a continuous span of 9m (normally limited to 4m) by installing the necessary steelwork to achieve the desired result.

AB Produce

AB Produce supplies a range of potatoes and prepared vegetables to the wholesale, retail, processing, catering and food service supply chain. They are based in Swadlincote in the East Midlands.

Process

From design to installation, Stancold was appointed to build a modern food processing area using insulated composite panels and include packaging areas, two cold stores, one chiller and one blast chiller.

Over multiple on-site consultations, Stancold’s Food Projects team were able to coordinate a design and construction schedule for the new food processing area.
